Microsoft’s recent Patch Tuesday addressed a remote code execution vulnerability affecting the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) hosting process. Mozilla acted to protect its users by adding the Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in for Firefox to its blocklist, along with the .NET Framework Assistant extension.

With Service Pack 1 update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, released back in August 2008, Microsoft also added ClickOnce support for Firefox in the form of a Firefox extension called Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant. A related Windows Presentation Foundation plug-in has also been installed in the browser to support other .NET Framework features.

These two add-ons were installed surreptitiously at machine level, without the user’s consent, an action that at the time enraged many security-conscious Firefox users. This method of deployment also caused the Uninstall button for the .NET Framework Assistant extension to be grayed out, a problem that Microsoft later… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/windows-7-softpedia-review.html

On October 22nd, 2009, Microsoft will reboot Windows. Next week, just five days from now, Windows 7 will hit store shelves worldwide. And yet, there already are millions of users currently running Windows 7, including the gold version of the operating system. For the early adopters that have embraced Windows 7 since before Milestone 3 approximately a year ago, through the Beta Build 7000 and Release Candidate (RC) Build 7100, and every other leaked interim development release of the OS, the Windows reboot has already taken place. A new apex of Windows is now booting on production environment computers on a daily basis, including a few of the machines I’m using.

On October 22nd, 2009, Microsoft will reboot its operating system to the best Windows client the company has developed since MSDOS. Some might be fooled into thinking that Windows 7 was a less ambitious project than Vista, and only a minor upgrade. I disagree. To put it simply, Windows 7 is a result of realistic strategy,… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/twitter-is-not-up-for-sale.html

While visiting Japan for the launch of the local version of Twitter mobile website, it seems that Biz Stone decided to put an end to the rumors on the web and declared that the continuously expanding micro-blogging network was definitely not for sale.

One of the most intriguing but also fascinating aspects about Twitter is that its popularity did not bring any financial profit to its founders. There are members who use their profiles for promoting products or putting up discounts, thus gaining money via Twitter. Even though the company itself is not gaining any revenue, analysts have valued it at around $1 billion.

Predictably enough, large companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook have approached Twitter representatives in order to talk about a partnership or even an acquisition. The strategy is to always try to get a share of the trendiest platform of the moment, and this is currently Twitter.

On a different note, the social network’s co-founders, Biz Stone and Evan… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/weekend-reading-all-hail-valve-bene…

Randy Pitchford, the leader of Gearbox, creator of Borderlands and a known straight talker, has recently commented that Steam, the digital distribution service created and maintained by Valve, could be a problem for smaller developers because of its potential to be a monopoly and because of the conflict of interest within the controlling company.

He suggested that maybe Steam could be spun off to become an independent company. Immediately after, a host of small developers, from 2D Boy to Tripwire Interactive, creators of Red Orchestra and Killing Floor, which are Steam distributed, stepped up to say that the service is actually a great boon to their business, as it allows them to quickly reach players without dealing with the convoluted process of negotiating a distribution deal.

Both sides have sensible arguments and the overall picture seems to show Valve as a company that maintains a clear separation between the side creating original games, like Half Life or Left 4 Dead, and the… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/batman-arkham-asylum-and-the-physx….

There’s not really a lot you can say on Batman: Arkham Asylum that hasn’t yet crossed the globe a few times. It is the best comic book-inspired video up to date – and even has a world record to prove it – and it’s a very good game on its own as well. The title managed to combine the stealth and combat aspects very nicely, without making either of them seem out of place.

You are Batman after all, so as long as they have nothing bigger than lead pipes, you can go toe to toe with an entire platoon. Give the psychos from Black Rock some guns and poor “Bat baby” ends up on the floor. Stealth is pretty basic and well thought of since there’s little chance that anybody will look up at the gargoyles and spot the black cape wandering through the shadows.

The game has its share of brain-teases as well, brought to you by the helping hand of The Riddler, but it’s fun, challenging and even if the plot isn’t that brilliant, it does have a bit of a twist by placing you in the Arkham loony… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/google-launches-central-accessibili…

Google is one of the largest web companies in the world but despite its size it has managed to avoid many of the pitfalls and isn’t a money-hungry corporation yet. The company’s motto since its inception has been “Don’t be evil” and it has maintained its image through the charity work it’s doing or the investment in green technology. Another area where the company aims to make a difference is with its own services, which it has tried to make available to as many people as possible. It is now focusing those efforts with a new website, www.google.com/accessiblity, which will house all of Google’s projects related to accessibility.

“Information access is at the core of Google’s mission, which is why we work to make the world’s content available to people with disabilities, such as blindness, visual impairment, color deficiency, deafness, hearing loss and limited dexterity. Building accessible products isn’t only the right thing to do, it also opens up Google services to very… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/amazon-and-walmart-com-go-head-to-h…

Online retail is already big business in the US and Amazon is by far the largest player in the market. Its recent foray into e-books has also proven quite profitable, creating a new market for e-books and e-book readers that is becoming hotly disputed. Now Wal-Mart, one of the largest brick-and-mortar retailers in the US, is going against Amazon on both fronts with huge discounts on 10 eagerly anticipated hardcover books including Stephen King’s “Under the Dome” and Sarah Palin’s “Going Rogue” but the online retail giant isn’t taking it sitting down.

As Cnet reports, Wal-Mart recently dropped the prices on 10 books to just $10 on the company’s online store Walmart.com. With hardcover books usually going for around $30 to $35, the discount is significant but the price point wasn’t exactly random. $10 is what e-books on Amazon’s Kindle store go for, and the digital alternatives are becoming a growing threat to good old-fashioned books. Wal-Mart doesn’t have an e-book store at the… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/motorola-sholesdroid-comes-to-europ…

Mobile phone maker Motorola is already known to plan on coming to the US market with a second Android-powered mobile phone, following the Motorola Cliq, which will soon come to T-Mobile and is already available for purchase in Europe as Motorola Dext, and now we learn that the handset might also come to the old continent in the near future. The device, dubbed Motorola Sholes (or Droid), has just made a short pit stop at FCC, bearing GSM connectivity.

“This equipment is a GSM portable transceiver, which operates in the 850, 900,1800 and 1900 MHz PCS band. It also operates in WCDMA 900 and 2100 MHz and contains GPRS Class 12 and a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth function (Part 15.247). The unit may also be connected to a computer via a USB connection (Part 15 Class B Computing Device Peripheral),” is how the handset is described.

Interestingly enough, it seems that Motorola has been trying to get the phone through FCC without people noticing it, and the filing shows the Sholes name only once…. (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/p-diddy-holds-audience-%E2%80%98hos…

They don’t say “mo’ money, mo’ problems” for nothing, it seems. Sean Combs, also known as P. Diddy, recently lost a $20,000 ring and, in a desperate attempt to get it back – which he never did, for that matter – he sequestrated and had his security guys frisk all 160 members of the audience for it, the New York Post reports.

The incident occurred while shooting the BET music-video show “106 & Park” at the CBS studios, reports in the media say. Diddy’s ring seems to have dropped off his finger as he was hurling fake $100 bills to the audience. The moment he noticed it was gone, he told the 160 members of the audience they were not allowed to leave the set until everybody was frisked for it. Said and done, but the ring was still not found.

“A lot of people askin[g] about a ring I lost. Yes I did. And that’s ok. I lose things too. You win some you lose some. My loss is anothers gain. Its ok to lose things because it makes you appreciate what you still have! I didn’t like that ring… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/placebo-effect-proven-in-the-spine….

The placebo effect has been documented on numerous instances. It is most obvious in the field of medicine, where patients told that they were given drugs for their pain or diseases seem to get better even though the pill itself contained only sugar or flour. Such an instance was recently documented using advanced observations technology, in people being treated for burns. Scientists say that the action of the effect at this point defies explanation, NewScientist reports.

The dorsal horn of the spinal cord, a formation located more towards the back of the spine and made out of gray matter, was the target for the new investigation. The scientists used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to determine how the spinal-cord neural activity that is usually linked to pain modified after a placebo treatment was applied. FMRI usually cannot be used for such studies, as it is best suited for analyzing the cortex. In addition the dorsal horns are surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid,… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)
