The attack on those people who play games, now a majority of the adult population in most developed countries, seems to be getting more and more bizarre. After being portrayed as being anti social and being blamed for every bit of violence in modern society, gamers are now said to be unable to actually detect roadside bombs when serving in the military forces.

An article in the Los Angeles Times mentioned there are two groups of enlisted personnel that are very good at spotting roadside bombs or improvised explosive devices: those who hunted in their youth and grew up in the country and those who were raised in tough neighborhoods where they needed to watch out for gang attacks.

The article then mentions a category that does not do so well. The Los Angeles Times says “Personnel who fit neither category, often young men who grew up in the suburbs and developed a liking for video games, do not seem to have the depth perception and peripheral vision of the others, even if their eyesight… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/how-terahertz-waves-influence-dna.h…

Terahertz radiation occupies the wavelengths that connect microwaves to infrared and is currently considered to be one of the most promising areas of research out there. Over the past decade, more and more researchers have dedicated their work to this form of radiation, which has the amazing ability of penetrating through just about everything, including inanimate objects such as glass, paper, cloth, walls and other such things. It can also be used to “frisk” a human body from a distance, and to peer inside rooms, which makes it a potent monitoring tool.

However, on the downside, the negative effects that terahertz wavelengths may have on the human body are not entirely known. Evidence of how they influence DNA is flimsy at best, and a clear conclusion has yet to be drawn from available research. Those who argue that the radiation is not harmful say that the photons making it up are not energetic enough to break chemical bonds or ionize atoms and molecules, Technology Review… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/the-planet-may-have-went-nuclear-in…

According to a group of researchers, it may be that the earliest forms of life on the planet might have been made possible by the influence of thousands of small, nuclear fission reactors blasting everything around them with radiation. The model would account for the reason why a radioactive substance has all but disappeared from the Earth’s crust, and also for how a source of oxygen may have been capable of doing all this, ScienceNow reports.

New types of photosynthetic bacteria are generally credited with bringing about the massive amounts of oxygen that flooded the planet’s atmosphere around 2.5 to three billion years ago. This oxidation event was crucial for the emergence and development of complicated life, as everything that lives today is heavily reliant on oxygen as a source of energy. Plants and other photosynthetic organisms are different, as they process carbon dioxide and sunlight to obtain oxygen and energy.

Canadian researchers Laurence Coogan, a geologist, and… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/endweekgame-30-october.html

Andrei Dumitrescu: This weekend I have my birthday party so gaming is going to take a back seat to talking to all friends and enjoying a various amount of alcoholic beverages. But I really cannot go on for two full days without turning on the computer and engaging in some videogaming and I will likely download the 1.3 patch for Hearts of Iron III, which has been released as a beta by Paradox Interactive and is set for an official release at some point in early September.

Hearts of Iron III is a superb grand strategy title but its sheer complexity has led to its working less than perfect after the two first patches released. It’s by no means broken in any way but there are small glitches that the dedicated wargaming community, which usually picks up Paradox games, will spot immediately. The company has moved rather fast to create a comprehensive patch and is now asking the community to offer some feedback and tell it whether any huge bugs remain in 1.3. I will contribute to that… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/epic-mickey-does-not-support-motion…

Epic Mickey seems to be shaping up as one of the big Nintendo Wii releases of 2010 and a media blitz following the official unveiling of the videogame is in full swing. The Disney universe-based title, which is being created by Warren Spector and his Junction Point team, aims to both reinvent classic characters from cartoons and to create a story offering all the values that Disney has come to project over the years.

When he talked at length about Epic Mickey with 1UP, Warren Spector addressed the Wii Motion Plus issue head on saying that “Our goal for this game is to make sure it doesn’t break if you have one installed. I am intrigued by it, and if we get to do more games that use this basic mechanic, I’d like to play around with it. I have some ideas about it, but not for this game.”

But the game developer, who has also said that the Balance Board is not integrated into Epic Mickey, seems to have some plans related to the most useless looking of Nintendo Wii add ons, the E3… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/nokia-siemens-networks-announces-lt…

Infrastructure telecommunications provider Nokia Siemens Networks has announced today that it is conducting end-to-end LTE interoperability testing with four of the world’s leading mobile phone vendors. The frequency bands the company is testing include AWS, 700 MHz and 2100 MHz, based on the fact that different regions use different frequencies.

According to the infrastructure vendor, the testing includes end-to-end network configuration in accordance with commercial LTE hardware, such as the Flexi Multiradio Base Station and the Evolved Packet Core, as well as the necessary software solutions. The commercial availability of LTE handsets and the interoperability capabilities are one of the main necessities for the commercial launch of the first LTE services.

Nokia Siemens Networks also says that it has recently managed to complete the first end-to-end calls on LTE, and that the new tests mark another important milestone in the commercialization of LTE. The company’s LTE radio and… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/algae-may-have-caused-all-mass-exti…

Over the course of the planet’s history, there have been five extinction events that scientists know of, and each and every single one of them may have been caused by nothing more than algae. The new idea was proposed by a scientist on October 19, at the annual Geological Society of America meeting. As expected, his idea immediately sparked a heated controversy, LiveScience reports.

Most scientists believe that the events may have been caused by an asteroid impacting our planet. The debris kicked in the atmosphere, coupled with the shock waves and the widespread fires that would have ensued, might have killed off many of the Earth’s species. Some experts believe that the extinction events were caused by exploding supervolcanoes and massive tremors that suddenly and abruptly reshaped the world’s map. There are, of course, those who believe that the extinctions took place on account of both of these scenarios happening at the same time.

The cataclysmic events, which claimed the… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/capcom-boasts-its-figures.html

It may not beat Nintendo as far as profits go, but at least for now, Capcom makes money by the truckload. The company announced in July that its April-June quarter managed to get a ¥19.5 billion or $213 million revenue. It has updated its situation today, and the April-September time segment brought it a total of ¥38.9 billion. That amounts to $426 million, and almost half a billion dollars has a very nice ring to it. Even if the April-June quarter didn’t do as well as it had hoped, and it brought only a ¥2.23 billion or $24.4 million net profit to the company, it made up for it in the end. The total six-month income has an overall increase of 58.4 percent, mounting up to ¥2.96 billion, or $32.4 million.

The Home Video Games segment was a big part of these numbers, as it grew in revenues by 68.3 percent, up to ¥27.7 billion yen or $303 million. As such, the operating income doubled to ¥7.3 billion, $79.9 million. If you feel all the numbers and time tables confuse you, don’t worry,… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)
