Hasselblad chose Friday to unveil a long-in-progress upgrade to its H System medium format cameras. The H4D is billed as one of the first cameras to have a true off-center autofocus system, known as True Focus. Where even DSLRs often have to first focus and then reposition the camera to …

Gmail has just unveiled a new interesting feature in its Gmail Labs program called “Hide read labels,” which is just a small tweak but can prove very useful in some circumstances as it allows users to hide the left sidebar labels for the emails that they have read already. This makes for a less cluttered interface but also allows users to more easily keep track of their unread messages.

“A lot of people want to see their labels in order to see which ones have unread messages, but they don’t want a long list of label names cluttering up the left hand side of their inboxes. To help out with this, we’ve made a Gmail Labs feature called ‘Hide read labels’,” David de Kloet, software engineer at Google, wrote. “This is particularly handy if you use your inbox as a to-do list where unread messages are the outstanding things you need to take care of. If you use that method along with labels like “Home” and “Project X,” it’s easy to see all your to-dos in context.”

The feature is… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

According to a new investigation funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), it may be that teenagers’ diet and eating habits are heavily influenced by their social background. The paper essentially shows that the diet, weight and health of teens is directly influenced by practices and perceptions of different social classes, and is the first research ever to reveal this association. Policymakers have for a long time insisted that such investigations be conducted, so that informed decisions on the matter could be taken, e! Science News reports.

“It is evident that children are molded according to their parents’ expectations about behavior,” explains the leader of the new research, University of Hertfordshire expert Dr. Wendy Wills. By looking at the diets, weight levels and health statuses of middle class teens and their parents, the expert says that a clear conclusion about the ideals and beliefs of the family can be successfully drawn. The parenting skills of… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

For some time, we’ve been playing games that have no place in modernity here, at Softpedia. This is the direct result of getting access to the SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection, which contains such old-time gems like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe. But the game in the pack that has (re)captivated me the most has been one that is, in part, better than worse than those classics at the same time. It’s Altered Beast, a title that I have only played on arcades and then promptly forgotten about (probably because I was less than able to master it at the tender age of about 13).

Rediscovering Altered Beast is a sort of revelation. The game implements a lot of great ideas. First of all, it has level-up mechanics. By picking up the Spirit bubbles that appear after defeating certain enemies, you can upgrade the overall abilities of your character, making them more capable of projecting power. It’s not like in the other beat-’em-ups where picking up stuff either increased your health or… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Redmond-based software giant Microsoft will launch on the market its latest operating system for personal computers, Windows 7, on October 22, this is something that we are all aware of, yet it seems that some system builders say they will ship the platform on devices prior to that date. According to a recent article on TechFlash, October 13 is the lucky date for those eagerly awaiting for Windows 7 to become available on the market.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been more prepared for an operating system launch than I have been with Windows 7,” Jon Bach, president of Auburn-based Puget Systems Inc., reportedly stated. According to him, Microsoft has announced small system builders that it will enable them to sell Windows 7 PCs the same day they will receive product keys, no later than October 13.

On the other hand, Microsoft says that system builders won’t be ready to ship their products before the official general availability date of the platform. They will need the Windows 7 OEM… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

In a more unusual study, experts at the Northwestern University (NU) looked at the similarities and differences in patterns of correspondence between modern-day e-mail writers and old-school letter writers. The investigation revealed striking similarities between the two types of writing, underlined by the same patterns of human activity, the experts report in the September 25 issue of the top journal Science. The mechanisms used for correspondence are essentially the same today as they were when Charles Darwin lived, e! Science News reports.

“We are interested in identifying and understanding patterns of human behavior, in learning how we make choices. There are patterns to how we spend our days, and these models of probability, of how people allocate their time to do certain tasks, can be applied to many different areas,” explains the purpose of the new research NU McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science professor of chemical and biological engineering Luis Amaral…. YouTube is by far the largest online video site in the world and one of the most popular destinations online. Still, even with Google’s might behind it, it hasn’t managed to become profitable just yet. Google says it’s on the right track and revenue is increasing steadily and a new reported deal with Warner Music may be a sign pointing in that direction.

The new agreement, which according to AdAge has been already signed by the two parties involved, should bring music videos from artists like Green Day, U2 and Madonna back to the video site after being removed last year. Warner Music and YouTube have had a previous licensing deal but the major music label backed out last December after an agreement on revenue sharing couldn’t be reached. Now though, the two companies have made up and have signed a new deal or are at least in the final talks, according to other sources.

Talks were resumed in summer and the negotiations are now apparently done with the official announcement being… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

The European Space Agency (ESA) launched its Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology (SMART-1) satellite in an orbit around the Moon on September 27, 2003. Over the next three years, the spacecraft conducted scientific observations of Earth’s natural satellite. On September 3, 2006, it was deliberately crashed into the lunar surface, at a speed of about 2,000 meters/second (4,500 miles per hour). Apparently, even after its “death” it still helped scientists have a better understanding of the Moon. Its former control team has released an image of crater Cabeus-A, where NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) is scheduled to crash in October.

The LCROSS spacecraft carries with it a spent Centaurus rocket stage, which it plans to drop in the crater over the next few weeks. As the huge chunk of metal impacts the crater, LCROSS will photograph the dust plume that will form. Experts hope that its sensitive instruments will be able to pick up signs of… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)

Website: http://www.2dayplaza.com/new-approach-to-boosting-general-ha…

Happiness is a word many of us use to describe emotional states, and its meaning is clear to everyone. But, among scientists, determining a clear definition of the word proves to be a bit of a head scratcher. Finding out where the trait comes from is even more difficult. Some schools of thought propose a genetic origin for happiness, as in parents passing on predispositions to their children, while others believe that people develop the state of mind over the years. There are of course those who propose a mixed approach to determining its origins, and argue for a combination of the two theories.

Recently, at the World Congress on Psychosomatic Medicine, held in Torino, Italy, the current progress in the field of happiness research has been discussed. Washington University in St. Louis (WUSL) professor of Psychiatry Robert Cloninger, speaking at the scientific gathering, presented new data on the correlations that were inferred to exist between the state of mind and inherited… (Read the rest of this article at the following article source link for the full story)
